Hetian jade (Hotan jade) has been cherished in Chinese culture for thousands of years. But as its global popularity rises, so do sophisticated fakes — many of which can deceive even seasoned collectors.
At My Story of Orient, we specialize in authentic Hetian jade, especially top-grade Russian green jade (碧玉). We’ve written this guide to help you avoid the most common traps in the jade market.
✅ TL;DR: Flawless surface? Too bright? UV reaction? These could be signs of treated or fake jade. Learn how to check before you buy.
🔍 1. Low-Level Fakes: Dyed & Glued Jade Pieces
Cheap fakes often use dyed stones and glued elements to mimic “籽料” (seed jade).
How it’s done:
- Non-jade minerals are dyed to look like skin-colored jade.
- Separate pieces (like a “head” or top) are glued to mimic seed shapes.
Signs to watch for:
- Unnaturally bright color
- Glossy surface with glass-like shine
- A perfectly round or symmetrical pebble

⚗️ 2. Acid-Soaked Stones Posing as Russian Jade
To mimic the luxurious feel of Russian white jade (鹅料), some sellers soak Qinghai jade in chemical baths that enhance color and eliminate flaws.
Danger:
These stones can test as “Hetian jade” in labs, because their mineral content is genuine — but the feel, structure, and integrity are compromised.
How to spot:
- Uniform, chalky whiteness
- No natural transition between layers
- Feels unnaturally light or stiff

🌀 3. Machine-Tumbled & Dyed Fake “Seed Jade”
This common scam involves mechanically tumbling mountain jade for days to simulate river erosion — then dyeing it layer by layer to mimic natural skin tone.
🔦 Use a UV light to detect dye or glue — these often fluoresce differently than natural jade.

🧪 4. Sugar Jade Manipulation: Added, Removed, or Altered
Sugar jade (糖白玉) is manipulated in several ways:
- Add brown “sugar” tones to plain white jade
- Remove real sugar layer to make it appear more valuable
- Soak stiff, translucent jade to resemble creamy types
📜 Even certification may label these as “Hetian jade,” but treatment matters.

🧩 5. Composite Jade: Glued or “Puzzle” Pieces
High-level fakes involve gluing together real jade fragments — like skin from one piece and meat from another — to mimic high-value stones.
Detection tips:
- Use a UV flashlight to check glue lines (often fluoresce)
- Look for color seams or unnatural transitions

🤔 Why Are Fakes So Common?
Surprisingly, part of the reason is consumer expectation.
Buyers today often seek:
- Perfectly white jade
- Flawless, glossy surfaces
- Heavy weight and glassy shine
But real Hetian jade is about oiliness, texture, and natural imperfection.
